Which
Acorn machines can use Topcat?
|

|
Topcat supports Acorn Thin Clients having NC OS 1.06
or later and other Acorn Computers with RISC OS 3.10 or later, including the A310, A440,
A3000, A5000, A7000 series and RISC PCs. You will need new Topcat Client software for your network
card - available now for most types of network card. Further details at::
Which
Acorn Computers can run Windows Applications?
|

|
This depends on the type of monitor (screen)
attached to your Acorn Computer. Some monitors are not able to display the Windows
desktop, and hence are unsuitable. The minimum requirement is a VGA-compatible monitor.
Also the A3000 & A4000 series are under-powered to run Windows sessions effectively,
so at least an A5000 is suggested, with the Sprinter, A7000, A7000+ or RISC PC systems
recommended.

What
Windows applications can be run?
|

|
Virtually all 16- and 32-bit applications which currently
run under Windows NT will be able to run with the Citrix ICA client and Windows NT 4
Terminal Server Edition. Some features may not be available initially - eg
client drive mapping,
and some types of software may not run as well as on a desktop pc - eg games software
which rely on fast graphics performance. But most software will run very well, and in most
cases, if a fast server is used, will take advantage of this and exceed performance
provided by many stand-alone PCs.

Can I run
multi-media applications, eg Encarta?
|

|
Yes, Encarta and other multi-media programs will
run quite effectively.

Can I
still use RISC OS applications?
|

|
Yes, access to existing RISC OS applications is
still available with the Topcat product, though there may be some problems with protected
software - eg Impression. Contact the Application supplier for information. Please
note, Topcat Lite does not support RISC OS.

Can
I keep Windows applications open and switch to a RISC OS application?
|

|
Yes, with the Topcat product, it is possible to
switch between the Windows screen and the RISC OS desktop, by pressing SHIFT-F1 in Windows
mode. This will return the user to the RISC OS desktop with the ICA Client on the Icon
bar. To resume running the Windows application, double-click on the ICA Client icon (on
the icon bar). Note that for this to work, the ICA Client must be run
first from the Apps folder, so that it sits on the icon bar.
Then connect to the Terminal Server by double-clicking on the relevant ICA Configuration
file, dragging it to the ICA icon-bar icon or using Menu mouse button and
choosing the appropriate connection.

How do
I switch between RISC OS and Windows?
|

|
To start a Windows session from the RISC OS desktop,
first run the ICA Client by opening the Apps folder and
double-clicking on the ICA Client icon. Then double-click on the relevant ICA
Configuration file - a sample file (called NTServer) is included in the Networks.Metaframe
sub-directory in the Server.

Can I
convert files created in Windows for use by a RISC OS application and vice-versa?
|

|
Yes, but you may need some commercial software to
help you, depending on the type of file you are trying to convert. There is a list
of file types (File extensions) and the utility you need to use in order to convert the
file in the Comp.Sys.Acorn FAQ, which is published regularly to the newsgroup.
How do I run a
Published Application?
|

|
First the application needs to be Published on
the server. (Use Metaframe Tools|Application Configuration on the
Windows NT Terminal Server.) Then a suitable configuration file needs to be
created for the RISC OS clients. An example is shown here.
Set the file type to ICA and then this can be launched to run the specified
Published Application.
