Acorn NC: How do I tell if I need an upgrade?

btnTopPage.gif (1133 bytes)

Only ARM-based Network Computers with Ethernet interfaces are compatible with Topcat.

If, when you switch on the Acorn NC, it displays the version number 0.41, then this is compatible with Topcat version 1.03 onwards.

For earlier versions, use the following procedure to determine whether the NC's ROM is compatible:

  1. Enter Supervisor mode - on power-up, press Escape.
  2. At the * prompt, enter the command: Rommodules - this can be abbreviated to Rom. (include the . in the command).
  3. The list of modules in the NC's ROM will be displayed on screen.  At the end of the listing, the entries for Podule 0 (the Ethernet interface) will appear.   If the module: NTStartup is not present, the NC is not compatible, and will need an upgrade.
  4. If the NTStartup module is present:

NTStartup 0.03 will work with Topcat Versions prior to 1.02
NTStartup 0.04 will work with Topcat Version 1.02
NTStartup 0.41 will work with Topcat Version 1.03 onwards.
NTStartup 1.01 will work with Topcat Version 1.03 onwards.

Can I use Atomwide's NTFiler with Topcat?

btnTopPage.gif (1133 bytes)

Yes, you can either use NTFiler in addtion to Topcat's TCFiler or as a replacement.    There are slight differences in NTFiler's configuration requirements:

bulletNTFiler's dummy user has no password by default, therefore you will need to change the NTFiler dummy user to ArmUser followed by the password.   It is not possible to use Armboot or ArmUser as the dummy user by deleting the password.
bulletAll users must have their Home Directory explicitly stated in the Profile section of User Manager for Domains as a UNC path (\\server\share) in the Connect..To.. section (rather than a local path), and a path to it shared.
bulletFor Topcat version 1.4 onwards, there are further requirements.    Click here for details.

What Client Licences do I need with Terminal Server?

btnTopPage.gif (1133 bytes)

For File and Print services NT Server Client Access Licences (CAL) are required for each client device accessing the server.    If in addition you wish to run Windows sessions using the RISC OS ICA Client you will need the appropriate number of Citrix Metaframe Licences and NT Terminal Server CALs for each concurrent session.   Further advice on this can be found on Microsoft's web site at: Windows 2000 Terminal Services Licensing FAQ

Can I use the latest version of !Printers with Topcat?

btnTopPage.gif (1133 bytes)

The latest version of !Printers (currently version 1.64) is available for download from Risc OS Ltd.'s web site.   You need to check with Risc OS Ltd. with respect to licensing issues, but from a technical standpoint, this version works well with Topcat.    Just re-name the existing !Printers and replace it with the new version in Armboot.Printing folder.    Unlike the older version, the new version allows each client machine to have its own settings and a more comprehensive list of printer drivers is available.   For more information, visit Risc OS Ltd.'s web site by clicking here.
